Retreats &Workshops
For over 24 years I have been teaching all levels of contemporary & ancient techniques of basketry along with mixed media as well as exploration of encaustic painting techniques for the last 7 years. I like to teach in intimate venues close to nature to calm, to inspire, and provide serendipitous embellishment to the work. I find teaching and working this way creates a strong dialogue that builds into the process. With that being said, my goal with students is to build on their existing knowledge and skills or to give them a strong foundation of beginners skills. I learn by playing. To really understand a material and learn its language you must get down and dirty, push the limits and break the rules, smell the flowers and have a snack. I teach what I know by doing and research. So put your play clothes on and let’s have fun!
THE ORIGINAL BULL WHIP SEA KELP POUCH
June 5th 10am-3pm Sawmill Ballroom Lorane, Oregon
In 1991 while living in Nesika Beach, Oregon I designed this pouch among other Bull Kelp designs in my studio. I gained coastal recognition for working with odd interesting materials while teaching at Oregon Coast Aquarium, South Slough National Estuarine Reserve and many other venues in and out of Oregon and that work is published in many regional and national publications. Join me while I share the basics of this stitched Bull Kelp design, roots, embellishment, wax linen thread and stories of living in one of the most amazing areas of Oregon’s South Coast for many years. Fee $85 - All materials included. You need to bring play clothes, lunch, blunt needle, scissors
ARE YOU READY TO GET WAXED?
June 18th 10am – 4pm Sawmill Ballroom Lorane, Oregon
Encaustic painting is a ancient medium composed of beeswax and damar resin, and can be highly habit forming and expensive if you become a junkie. This workshop will build on the basics of layering with batched unfiltered bee’s wax medium with textures left in from the hive. Its amber color will enhance found objects, ephemera, fiber and papers while leaving a translucent dreamy aged vintage look without the use of more costly paint colors. Finish off by learning tricks for scraping layers back and light oil stick glazing while exploring what just the basic medium and limited tools can do for your collage work. This will also cover cooking your own basic batch on site during the workshop.
Workshop fee $145 - Included is wax medium, limited ephemera, fibers, oil stick for glazing, brushes, single edge razor blade, needles, texture makers, scissors, awl, shared use of heat guns, 3 Encausticbords (Extra Encausticbords will be offered for purchase).
You need: play clothes, lunch, your own ephemera, photo copies, fibers you like, roll of waxed paper, metal spoon, latex gloves, torch, metal cooling cookie rack (some items can be found at dollar store)
